Vertex Climbing Center

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm a first time climber and want to know if I should take the Basic Safety class?

Yes, the Basic Safety class is designed for first time climbers. In less than an hour we will teach everything you need to know to safely climb indoors. After the course you will be able to pass the Belay test.

What is the Belay test?

The Belay test is our way of making sure that every climber has the skill and knowledge to safely climb and belay before using our gym. Ask a Vertex staff member for a Belay test and he or she will verify that you know how to how to tie yourself in and how to properly belay. After passing the test you're ready to climb.

How much does the Belay test cost?

The Belay test is free. After passing the class you only need a day pass (Adult $12 Youth $10) and a harness ($2). Climbing shoes ($3) are optional, though we recommend wearing some kind of tennis shoe. No sandals.

Can I teach a friend how to tie a figure eight knot and how to belay?

Yes, you can teach a friend how to tie the figure eight and how to belay but they will have to pass our test before climbing.

It has been a while since I last climbed. Do I need to take the Belay test again?

That would be a good idea. It is a good idea to refresh your skills and retake the Belay test before climbing again.
