Matt Curley

matt curleyMatt started climbing when he was 17 when some high school friends convinced him to drive them up Mt St Helena. Matt climbed outside on top-rope and trad around northern California for a handful of years before taking a 15-year break. He came back to climbing in 2008, when his kids were invited to a birthday party at Vertex.  Matt and his family have been members ever since. His daughter joined the Vertex youth climbing teams in 2011, and Matt started volunteering. For the past years, he has helped with the competitive teams at practices and competitions, setting protection for their outdoor climbing trips, and eventually he joined the Vertex staff as one of the coaches. Matt enjoys working with all ages, both introducing people to the joy of climbing, and also helping more experienced climbers break through barriers and fine-tune technique. His goal is to guide everyone he meets to the tools they need to succeed, whether that means getting six feet off the ground or sending 12a. He, also, actively competes throughout Northern California doing the best he can, against people half his age.
